چکیده

We report the existence of a single plane in the space of global photometric parameters describing elliptical galaxies and the bulges of early type spiral galaxies. The three parameters which define the plane are obtained by fitting the Sersic form to the brightness distribution obtained from near-infrared K band images. We find, from the range covered by their shape parameters, that the elliptical galaxies form a more homogeneous population than the bulges. Known correlations like the Kormendy relation are projections of the photometric plane. The existence of the plane has interesting implications for bulge formation models. The Relative Star Formation Histories of Spiral Bulges and Elliptical Galaxies in the Hubble Deep Fields

Hierarchical galaxy formation models make specific predictions concerning the relative assembly rates and star formation histories of spiral bulges and field ellipticals. Independently of the cosmological model and initial power spectrum of fluctuations, at all epochs the stellar populations in spiral bulges should be older and redder than those in typical ellipticals selected at the same redsh...

We present first results from an on-going survey of the stellar populations of the bulges and inner disks of spirals at various points along the Hubble sequence. In particular, we are investigating the hypotheses that bulges of early-type spirals are akin to (and may in fact originally have been) intermediate-luminosity ellipticals while bulges of late-type spirals are formed from dynamical ins...

The Near-ir Ca Ii Triplet - Σ Relation for Bulges of Spiral Galaxies

We present measurements of the near-infrared Calcium II triplet (CaT, CaT), Paschen (PaT) and Magnesium (Mg I) indices for a well-studied sample of 19 bulges of early to intermediate spiral galaxies. We find that both the CaT and CaT indices decrease with central velocity dispersion σ with small scatter. This dependence is similar to that recently found by Cenarro (2002) for elliptical galaxies...

The scatter in the near-infrared colour-magnitude relation in spiral galaxies

We have determined a dust-free colour-magnitude (CM) relation for spiral galaxies, by using I−K colours in edge-on galaxies above the plane. We find that the scatter in this relation is small and approximately as large as can be explained by observational uncertainties. The slope of the near-IR CM relation is steeper for spirals than for elliptical galaxies. We suggest two possible explanations...

Near - infrared surface photometry of early - type spiral galaxies : II . M / L ratios and dark halos . ⋆

Abstract. We present mass distributions obtained from near-infrared (NIR) surface brightness decompositions and rotation curve fitting of a sample of early-type spiral galaxies. Bulge and disk mass-to-light (M/L) ratios, dark halo parameters, and the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) acceleration parameter are derived. We find that the mean disk NIR M/L is higher than that of the bulge, and co...
